Last night we interviewed Matt Andrews who is the play by play voice of the Louisville Bats. Not only was this one of my favorite interviews led by our own Seubs, he answered a question about who Reds fans are going to see this season.
With no reservations, Matt said Denis Phipps.
Denis was called up to the big club over the winter after batting a combined .346 with 12 home runs and 64 RBIs at Double-A Carolina and Triple-A Louisville. The Reds also named him the organizations 2011 Minor League hitter of the year.
What is more interesting about him from Mark Sheldon at Reds.com is:
Reds outfield prospect Denis Phipps was 18 years old when he was signed by the organization out of the Dominican Republic in 2004. Remarkably, he had only been playing baseball for one year at the time because he grew up playing basketball as a point guard. His athletic idol was forward Dennis Rodman.
“I started baseball when I was 17,” said Phipps, who is now 26. “In my hometown, everybody played baseball and I didn’t.”
This is Phipps’ first Major League Spring Training and here is to hoping we get to see him excel. We know we could use another outfielder with some pop in the bat and a little speed.
