The Reds currently have six current arbitration eligible players

Mat Latos – he wants $4.7 million, the Reds offered $4.15 million.

Homer Bailey – he wants $5.8 million, the Reds offered $4.75 million

Shin-Soo Choo – he wants $8 million, the Reds offered $6.75 million

The other players who filed for arbitration are outfielder Chris Heisey, Mike Leake and reliever Alfredo Simon.

His case: Once again quietly effective, Choo bounced back from an injury-marred 2011 season to hit .283/.373/.441 with 16 homers, 67 RBIs, 88 runs and 21 stolen bases in 155 games in a dreadful Cleveland Indians offense. Moving to hitter-friendly Great American Ball Park and to a much more potent lineup should allow Choo to approach his 2009-2010 production (21 homers, 88 RBIs, .300/.397/.486 slash line).

Prediction: The last thing the Reds want to do is battle their newly-acquired and newly-anointed center fielder. Expect them to meet in the middle and close this manageable gap.

Arbitration can be a nasty thing, and the Reds have been able to avoid it for almost 10 years. Lets hope they can meet in the middle on some of these deals so that feelings are saved and chemistry is kept.

As most of you know, I am legally blind and unable to drive. For the past five years, my friend Larry Glass has been my driver from Dayton to Cincinnati and back for Cincinnati Reds home games.
Unfortunately, Larry has some health issues and won’t be able to drive this year, leaving me with no transportation to and from Reds games.
So…is there anybody out there with nothing much to do on their hands who would like to see most of the Reds home homes this season…for free.

Reading an article by Matt Snyder on CBS sports, there is one quote that gets me very excited.

With Votto, Phillips, Bruce, Chapman, Latos, Cueto, Hamilton, Shin-Soo Choo, Todd Frazier, Devin Mesoraco, Zack Cozart, Homer Bailey and more, the Reds have star power, role players, depth and potential for improvement in several areas. They are set up to contend every year for the foreseeable future. They went 97-65 last season, winning the NL Central, and there’s plenty more where that came from.

In fact, the Reds are so well set up that I don’t think it’s a stretch to say it would be a failure if they get to 2020 without having won a World Series ring or at the very least an NL pennant.

Boom. I know it is early to flip the switch into baseball season, but as I begin to shift focus it is articles like this the helps the blood move to the baseball part of the brain.

Opening day can not get here soon enough.

In less than a month the Reds will begin spring training. There are a ton of questions around this team but one of the most important is the health of Joey Votto’s knee.

Thinking back to early last season, Votto was on his way to an MVP type season and then injured the knee on a slide into third base. Two surgeries and a rough rehab later Votto was back for the Reds but never quite got back to what he was before the injury. Will he be fully healed and the Joey Votto that Reds fans expect? This is going to be a key thing to watch as Votto gets back onto the field.

One thing that makes this fan optimistic that Votto can return was what we saw from him at the plate after his return. Sure, there was no power in him (zero homeruns) but his plate discipline was evident and he managed to get on base in the playoffs. I hope Votto was able to get his knee and mind right this offseason and becomes the MVP we need at first base.

THAT”S why you play the game. After going up 2-0 in San Francisco last weekend, the Reds traveled home to Great American Ballpark needing just one win. A place where they held the best home record in the majors. Did I mention it was a place where they simply had to win one game out of three. ONE GAME. We know how it ended. It canadian casino online may just have been the worst week in Cincinnati sports history. Couple that with the week the Bengals had, I honestly believe this was THE WORST SPORTS Week ever.

How many of you saw the Reds heading out west to start the 2012 Postseason and thought they’d win two games at AT&T Park? I know I didn’t. Especially with the way the offense was performing over the last 3 weeks of the season. Then Johnny Cueto lasts all of 8 pitches in Game 1. Yeah, 8! Still the Reds find themselves with a commanding lead as they head home Tuesday for Game 3.

Congratulations to the Cincinnati Reds! The Reds clinched their 10th division championship with a 6-0 victory over the LA Dodgers on Saturday afternoon. It was a very interesting weekend to say the least. Obviously there were some things beyond people’s control however at least every one now knows about the TV show “Cruise In”.

The Reds went a quiet 5-2 last week sweeping their NL Central rivals Pittsburgh essentially ending all hope of a division title for the Buccos. Despite losing 2 out of 3 to the Miami Marlins in the fishtank, the Reds managed to drop their Magic Number to 5 games giving them a chance to clinch a postseason birth this week potentially in Wrigley Field.

The Reds took two out of three against the Pirates last weekend and three out of four against the Padres which extended their run of wins to 22 out of their last 26 games. That is insane! Only one other Reds team had previously won 22 out of 25, the 1975 Big Red Machine. Go figure.

Power rankings that is.  Go ahead, google it. Look at the popular pick for number 1 in the power rankings.

Now, I never care about rankings, I can take them or leave them. However, it is cool to see that the Reds are now officially on everyone’s radar.

Both the Pirates and Cardinals have altered their pitching rotations to match up when they play the Reds. The Pirates are a very good team this season and the Reds played them with out Votto, Phillips and in one game Bruce. The Reds still won the series.

What to you think is happening in Cincinnati? Are they really the best team in baseball?

With the Reds currently holding the best record in the majors and a 3.5 game lead over the Pirates for the NL Central, they welcome the chasers into Cincinnati this weekend for a 3 game series that could show a lot. No matter what happens the Reds will come out of the weekend still in first place. However, I am hoping the Reds can take at least two of the three and hold a solid lead in the division.

The Reds have only lost 3 games since the allstar break and have started to turn heads at the national level. Scott Van Pelt dedicated a ton of time on his radio show to talk about how the Reds are winning and why they would be scary in the post season.

The Tim Tebow network (aka ESPN) has been debating whether or not the team is the best in the bigs.

I don’t care about national recognition, I care about a team that seems to be taking each game one at a time and looks to push for the post season.

Lets hope the Reds are able to continue their winning ways against the Pirates this weekend and put some distance in their division lead.

The Reds did not get the leadoff man they, or the fans desired but they did make a surprising move that helped bolster their bullpen. The Reds acquired Jonathan Broxton from the Kansas City Royals for minor league pitchers Donnie Joseph and J.C. Sulbaran.

The deal was announced just after 3:30 pm much to the surprise of Reds fans considering the current strength of the Reds bullpen. Broxton has gone 1-2 with a 2.27 ERA so far in KC. He’s walked 14 batters while striking out 25. He is a big league reliever and has served primarily as a closer for KC this year due to the injury of Royals closer Joakim Soria. Since Broxton became KC’s closer he has 23 saves in 27 chances.

In exchange for Broxton, the Reds traded 24-year old LHP Donnie Joseph. Joseph was drafted in the 3rd round in 2009 out of Houston. He was rated the 12th best prospect in the Reds organization by Baseball America. Joseph split time in Pensacola and Louisville this year has an 8-3 record. He currently has a 2.86 ERA during his stint in Louisville. Before being called up to Triple A, Joseph was the closer for the BlueWahoos where he converted 13 saves with a .89 ERA.

They also traded 22-year old AA pitcher J.C. Sulbaran who has been pitching in Pensacola. Sulbaran was drafted out of high school in the 30th round by the Reds in 2008. He was 7-7 on the year with a 4.04 ERA in 104.2 innings pitched walking 54 and striking out 111.

We’re blogging at you today LIVE from Fifth Third Field in Toledo and I’m keeping a close eye on the Bats dugout for any “activity”. Any hugs, handshakes etc, we’ll break it to you here. In the meantime lets get caught up shall we?

12:31 – Just sat down in the press box, drink in hand and I’m sitting next to the Glass City legend John Wagner from the Toledo Blade. He’s been an awesome to hang out with the past two days and has been incredibly helpful. I may be the rookie in the room but he sure hasn’t treated me like one.

12:32 – Finally had a chance to check my Twitter feed, looks like the Reds won’t be getting Shane Victorino after all, apparently he’s been dealt to the Dodgers.

12:40 – Just noticed that last night’s losing pitcher Kanekoa Texeira is your starting pitcher today. Interesting. Bats fell to the Hens last night in 11 innings 10-9.

12:42 – Bill Rhinehart gets his first hit of the series a liner right back up the middle against Drew Smyly. This is the same Drew Smyly that pitched in GABP in June during the Tigers series on Sunday Night Baseball.

12:47 – Didi Gregorious rung up on a check swing. This guy is going to be a stud. He’s playing shortstop though so the real question is where does he fit?

12:50 – Neftali Soto grounds to 2nd to end the inning after two get on, after 2 1/2 Hens 1 Bats 0. Travis Webb now on to pitch for the Bats. Texeira’s line, 2 IP 1 run 1 earned 1 hit 1 walk 2 strikeouts.

12:57 – Travis Webb finds himself in a jam after two base hits to start the inning. Check that, Danny Worth just laced a 3 run bomb to left center, his fifth of the season as the Hens take a 4-0 lead, Bottom 3.

1:00 – Travis Webb gives up a double to Jerad Head a liner down the left field line. Webb has faced 6 batters and given up 4 hits. No one in the Bats bullpen warming up…at the moment.

1:06 – Drew Smyly’s day is done, 3 IP 2 hits 2 walks 5k 0 runs. Luke Putkonen now in for the Hens. Leading off the 4th will be Dioner Navarro, will he be a Red soon with Mesoraco’s “pending” suspension? Leads off the inning with a hit on the first pitch.

1:12 – Chris Valaika to the plate. This is a guy who Reds fans know well as he spent some time with them in years past. Not having the kind of year he’d hoped. Play-by-Play voice of the Bats Matt Andrews talks about him this week on our Redleg Weekly podcast which you can download here.

1:19 – Mudhens pull off the perfect hit and run as Henry hits the ball right where Gregorious would have been had he not been covering 2nd on the steal. Henry then steals 2nd 4 pitches later. Runners at 2nd and 3rd 1 out and now Carlos Fisher is up for the Bats in the bullpen.

1:22 – Error on Chris Valaika allows another run to score. Andy Dirks lined one right at him but it goes through his glove. Hens 5-0 Bottom 4th, runner at 1st and 3rd 1 out.

1:24 – Another run scored on a fielders choice, Gregorious and Valaika tried to get the double play to no avail it’s now 6-0 Hens bottom 4.

1:27 – Looking in the Bats dugout, still not seeing any activity. Fisher though will be pitching in the bottom of the 5th, came into the game last night in a bases loaded jam and struck out the only batter he faced.

1:35 – Reds minor leaguer of the year last year Denis Phipps with a single here in the fifth inning. Phipps on the year is hitting .206 in 256 AB’s. Has battled some injuries though this year with a stint on the DL. Gregorious hits a grounder to 2nd to end the inning, but Danny Worth drops the ball at 2nd, all runners safe. Rodriquez looking to get the Bats on the board here in the top of the 5th.

1:37 – Neftali Soto drives in Phipps with a single up the middle on he first pitch he sees, Bats on the board down 5-1. Navarro at the plate.

1:41 – Carlos Fisher now in to pitch for the Bats. Struck out the only batter he faced last night in the 8th inning with the bases loaded to keep the game tied. Travis Webb’s final line: 2 IP 6 hits 5 runs 3 earned 1 BB 2 K’s.

1:45 – Hens LF Jerad Head picked off of first. He just fell, didn’t try to slide, didn’t try to run, just fell to the ground. Interesting play.

1:47 – Not gonna lie, this weekend has pretty freakin sweet. Kind of wishing this was a full time job! Bats coming to bat now in the Top half of the 6th down 6-1. Came back from a 4 run deficit on Saturday night.

1:50 – Cody Puckett, who has homered in 3 straight games is today’s Tofts Ice Cream Strikeout Player of the game. He’s struck out the first two plate appearances today. Sorry fans, no more ice cream for you as he grounds out to third to lead off the 6th.

1:52 – Another pick off, this time for the Hens, RF Felix Perez fell asleep at first. Valaika follows that up with a 2 out single. John Wagner of the Toledo Blade announces from his Twitter feed that the Reds and Twins are in discussions regarding Twins CF Denard Span.

1:55 – Bats have loaded the bases in the top of the 6th, now Gregorious to the plate down 6-1. Sloppy game today, 3 errors.

1:57 – Gregorious beats out a slow chopper to 2nd base, Bats score to make it 6-2, Top 6. Pitching change under way for the Hens. No activity yet in the Bats dugout or Hens for that matter. Today’s attendance, 9577. Zach Miner now in to the pitch for the Bats. Putkonen’s final line for the Hens: 2.2 IP 7 hits 2 runs 0 earned 0 BB’s 3 K.

2:03 – Henry Rodriguez with the bases loaded and two outs pops out down the 3rd base line in foul territory to end the threat. Hens still lead 6-2 after 5 1/2.

2:05 – For what it’s worth, Bats manager David Bell looks pretty relaxed in the dugout, sitting down leaning back with his feet up on the railing.

2:07 – Hens lead off the inning with a walk by Brad Davis. Carlos Fisher still on the mound for the Bats as he forces Justin Henry to ground into a 4-6-3 double play.

2:13 – Neftali Soto leads off the 7th with a double off the left field wall. Navarro follows that up with a ground out bringing up Cody Puckett, does he have any more HR magic left in this series? Nope as he flies out to left.

2:14 – John Wagner of the Toledo Blade busted his ass today to research Danny Worth’s 5 RBI game for the Mudhens. Turns out the 5 RBI’s by Worth are a pro career high for him.

2:16 – Felix Perez flies out to deep center as we move to stretch time here at Fifth Third Field.

2:18 – New pitcher for the Bats, Nick Christiani. Final line for Carlos Fisher: 2 IP 0 hits, 0 runs, 2 BB and 1 K. Andy Dirks just hit a bomb to RF for the Mudhens on the 2nd pitch he saw. Toledo now up 7-2 bottom 7.

2:25 – Danny Dorn, the former Bat lines a double down the RF line with 1 out in the inning. Dorn’s had a pretty good series so far for the Hens. Must be nice playing against old teammates? Dorn is 6 for his last 19 in this series.

2:28 – Chris Valaika just hit his 6th home run of his season to left off the first pitch of the inning. Hens now lead 7-3 top 8.

2:32 – Justin Henry makes a diving catch in CF to rob Phipps of a base hit. Gregorious now at the plate with 2 outs in the inning.

2:34 – Heading to the bottom of 8 still 7-3. Nothing to report on as far as dugout hugs go.

2:40 – First close call. A foul ball comes flying at the press box and hits a foot below where i’m sitting. Another foot higher and that ball comes through the open window and either smacks me in the face or hits my computer. Whew.

2:45 – We’re now in the top of the 9th and Cody Puckett is due up 4th in the inning. Does he have anymore 9th inning magic left in his bat? Puckett has homered in the 9th inning in 3 straight games. Leading off the inning is Henry Rodriguez who strikes out but advances to SECOND after a throwing error by Hens catcher Brad Davis on the dropped 3rd strike. Neftali Soto now up.

2:47 – Soto strikes out, Navarro now to the plate.

2:48 – Soto pops out, here’s Puckett. Hens ARE pitching to him though. Bats down to their last out, down 7-3.

2:48 – No luck for Puckett this time as he pops out to right field to end the game. 2 hours 49 minutes. Your winning pitcher is Zack Miner. Kanekoa Texeira gets the loss for the Bats.

David and Seubs were very fortunate this week to be granted access to the pressbox at Fifth Third Field in Toledo, OH as the Louisville Bats visited the Mudhens. Unfortunately we recorded this BEFORE both the Reds and Bats lose Monday night. In the last 10 games, yes. Everyone knows the baseball season is a long race. There are about 40 million games that gives teams a chance to show what they really are. Going into the season we knew the Reds were a good team. A couple of offseason moves got fans excited about the pitching and the offensive power potential the Reds had. Also, we had Joey Votto. This was the one player that could always get the Reds back in the game, an incredible asset at the plate, I heard many times that this is the guy the Reds could not afford to lose to injury.

Then he got injured. Reds fans (as they typically do) freaked out. The season is over, it was mismanaged and the sky is falling. How can they compete with only a half game lead in the division and the best player in the world now out for 4 weeks?

So it got bad right?

Missing Votto the Reds have only been able to win 11 of their last 13 games. Also, they were able to win their last 10 in a row with 9 on the road.

Huh?

Yeah, when the Reds needed players to step up, that is exactly what they did. But who filled Votto’s shoes?

• Todd Frazier has started 10 games at first base (with Miguel Cairo starting three). Frazier has hit .269 with one home run and five RBIs since July 16.
• Scott Rolen is hitting .306 with two home runs and five RBIs in 10 games without Votto.
• Drew Stubbs since the Votto injury is 16 for 48 with 3 HR and 13 RBI’s.
• The Pirates (chasing the Reds in the division) have tried to stay close. In the last 19 the Pirates are a respectable 12 and 7. However, in the same span the Reds are 17 of 19.

So what is the Red’s edge?

Pitching.

• The Reds’ Opening Day rotation of Johnny Cueto, Mat Latos, Bronson Arroyo, Homer Bailey and Mike Leake has started all 101 of Cincinnati’s games this season, the only major league club that can make such a claim.
• Bailey is 3-0 with a 1.21 ERA in four outings during the Reds’ hot stretch.

Fight.

• They trailed in the 9th inning twice last week and won both (facing Co-Co Cordero).
• They trailed 6-0 after five innings in another game and rallied to win 7-6.

Can they get better?

Yes, and they may. Rumor has it that the Reds are looking at two players closely who could help in the outfield and also in the leadoff spot. Shane Victorino and Juan Pierre have both been rumored to be sought after by the Reds. (Also Shin-Soo Choo from the indians has got some rumor run)

All in all I think that Reds fans are pumped about what the Reds are showing and excited about the possibilities of adding a left handed bat and also getting Votto back.

Big weekend series against the Pirates that could all but close the door on the chasers if the Reds stay this hot.

Well well well, last week stunk for Reds fans. After winning 6 straight, the Reds followed that up by losing 5 of their next 6 games, both against teams with losing records. However it was great to see Mat Latos bounce back tonight against the Brew Crew.

Similar to RSS but more social, this enables you to create a feed of Twitter accounts you follow, from MLB brainiacs to actual players, so whether you tweet yourself about games or even your partycasino.com wins, or you stay silent and keep watch via your feed, you’ll feel a lot more informed.

3) Forums

Ah, forums – either a hive of endless meaningless debate and trolling, or a source of great information, friends, thoughtful discussion and a very social approach to the world of baseball. There’s a shedload of good forums around, it’s just a case of dipping your toe in the water and seeing whether it feels right for you.

Finally, don’t be afraid of information overload! Read what you find interesting, and utilise your new sources in order to become the baseball know-all that you want to be. So we’ll leave you to your reading, and who knows – we could be asking you for info soon!

In a way I’m thankful that Fox decided to show the Yankees Tigers game here in Northwest Ohio last night because I would have broken two remotes throwing them across the room during the 12-9 win over the Astros. The first place Reds! All they had to do to get here was sweep a first place Atlanta Braves team in 4 games. Yeah, a 4 game sweep of the braves to launch your Cincinnati Reds into first. A half game above the Cardinals and another 4 games above 3rd place Houston.

The Braves have lost their last 6 games at GABP. This alone is outstanding. The Braves have been a thorn in the side of the Reds for some time.

The hero of the night (other than the solid 6 innings the Reds got from Mr. Homer Bailey) was catcher Devin Mesoraco.  In the bottom of the 6th, Mesoraco came to the plate with bases loaded and the Reds down 1.  There was one out so I was hoping for a long fly ball that would allow the Reds to tie the game and have a chance for some more damage with a pinch hitter for Bailey.

Devin had other ideas, he launched a ball into left field.  It was never a question of whether it would go out, only that it would stay fair. It did.

A Grand Slam for the rookie catcher who has been struggling at the plate. Rightfully so the fans in attendance gave the kid a standing ovation.

Lets hope the Reds keep it up this weekend in a homestand against the Rockies.

Some fan Monday night at GABP caught two homeruns, count em, TWO HOMERUNS! Hope he bought a lotto ticket on his way home.

The road trip started off ok, splitting with the Braves and then for a moment it looked like the Reds could have swept the Mets.  Then a bunch of runs were given up by guys that just don’t give up runs (Lurch and the Missile).

So many fans thought by splitting this road trip at 3 and 4 would be a success, I was hoping for the opposite.  A 4 and 3 road trip would have set the Reds up nicely when they returned home.

So, in order for that to happen the Reds are going to need to take the next two from the Yankees. It could be a long weekend…

With the announcement of the Mets receiving the All Star game for next year I’ve been thinking, ok maybe stewing over the fact that the Reds haven’t received one in the new ball park. It seems like most teams get an All Star game soon after they build a new stadium but Great American was opened in 2003 and still hasn’t gotten one. I don’t understand why MLB wouldn’t want the second biggest event in baseball in the city that had the first pro baseball team.  Great American is a beautiful ballpark and would be a great place for the MLB to show off.  From what I’ve seen they have all but decided on Minnesota for 2014 which means the earliest Cincinnati could get it would be 2015, so at best Great American will be 12 years old and I would like you to tell me why Cincinnati would have to wait a dozen years for an All Star Game. 

I feel badly for our good buddy David who co-hosts this show with us. You see, he was one of the MANY who left the game on Sunday afternoon. Guess what he missed?

There is a mystery around Homer Bailey. Some fans scream for his head while others are optimistic that he is going to come around. Last night Homer faced an Atlanta Braves team that is one of the hottest in baseball. They just finished sweeping the Cardinals and in the process scored 23 runs. I was nervous that the Braves bats were going to crush Bailey.

However, Bailey comes out and throws a solid 6 and 2/3 innings giving up just one earned run.

The Reds bats while still struggling at crucial times were able to get a 3 spot on the board and take this first game against the Braves. I still contend the Reds batters disappear at times when there are runners on base. In the Second inning Bruce was able to get on board with a 0 out double and was then stranded on the bases when the last two outs were achieved by called strike 3. There is zero chance you are going to hit the batter in with the bats on your shoulder.

A big game was had by Chris Heisey with 2 doubles. The Second was what plated the 3rd and final run for the Reds.

To summarize, the Reds beat one of the top NL teams on the road with their 4th starter. It just doesn’t get better than that and while Homer may still not have climbed out of the doghouse in many fans eyes, a few more outings like this gets him back in the good graces of the Nati faithful.

Oh by the way, the Cardinals also lost their 4th in a row against the Cubs, so the night kept getting better.

In steps Joey Votto, already has two home runs and a double in the game. The Reds are down one in the bottom of the ninth and the bases are loaded. 2 balls and 2 strikes and Joey gets a high fastball.

Walk off grand slam.

On a day when most of the Reds were struggling at the plate, Votto comes through with 4 hits (3 home runs and a double) and 6 RBI’s.

The Reds also picked up a game on the cardinals and travel to ATL to face the Braves in a 2 game series starting tonight.

With the off day and the Reds seemingly on a roll I thought I would take a post to look at how the Reds are faring so far this season.

First, the Reds have arguably the best pitcher in Baseball at the top of their rotation. With a 1.12 ERA, Cueto is the second best staring pitcher in baseball (based on ERA alone.) He has 4 wins compared to the 0 wins Dempster (1.02 ERA) has. Cueto started yesterday in Milwaukee and faced off against Zack Greinke. Both left the game as a shutout and the Reds were able to score two runs in the top of the ninth for the win.

In the last week, Drew Stubbs is batting .360 with 3 doubles and two homeruns. In the last 30 days some other Reds are also getting hot.

• Joey Votto is hitting .311 with 16 RBI’s
• Jay Bruce is hitting .302 with 7 homeruns and 18 RBI’s
• Ryan Hannigan is hitting .321
• Todd Frazier is hitting a staggering .364

The Reds may have started the season slow, but have come on strong to win 5 of their last 6 series (the 6th being a tie with the Cubs due to a rain delay). A big test comes tomorrow and this weekend as the Reds welcome the Nationals to GABP for a good test.

Some questions I still have about the Reds are at the closer position and left field. I wonder if the Reds can find someone who will occupy the left field position as well as adding some production at the plate.

As for closer, many Reds fans were pretty excited when Cordero was not re-signed this season. Too many times we would be on the edge of our seats as a 3 run lead evaporated in the 9th and winning runs were in scoring positions. The same kind of drama is surrounding the Reds current closer Sean Marshall. It seems he struggles the same way Fransisco Cordero did when trying to close out games.

Lastly, what does the future hold for Aroldis Chapman? Everyone knows you can’t pay a guy that much to be a setup man. At some point a decision will need to be made on what his role with the team is going to be. Starting pitchers Homer Bailey and Mike Leake are struggling and we just mentioned the uncertainty at the closer role.

The Reds are still 3.5 games behind the Cardinals and are in a position where a good series for us and bad for them puts them in the mix at the top. As long as series continue to be won, the Reds are right where we want them to be.
